For anyone looking for a job you probably know that the job market has taken a drastic nose dive from wanting to hire people to becoming the Spanish inquisition. And if by some crazy chance, you actually do get an interview, forget being yourself. If you don't fit the qualifications of the rest of their human robot workers, well... sorry man, but no call back for you. In my field its only that much harder. It would be my dream to be a trailer editor for movies or video games. But my field requires the experience... usually no less than 3-5 years of it to be exact. Now imagine trying to find a job when you've had an internship that only gives you a total of a little less than half a year of experience.
But what makes the situation that much worse for me is that I love video editing--I even do it in my free time--but I have capturing material for the project. As a result my free time editing projects usually include material that other people have captured... yes, copyrighted material. Now, under the fair use clause, I can legally make these videos. And out of everything I do, they probably show the best side of my editing skills. But because they use copyrighted material... I can't use them in my portfolio... How about that? Rock in a hard place.
True, I also have a small body of work that I've made entirely from scratch, but you know you have a problem when it doesn't even warrant a phone call from a news station that's so desperate for professionals in your field that they're willing to hire people fresh out of high school with limited film knowledge. Why is it so hard to find a job? Why is it that everyone is so concerned with your personality and experience that your skills are factored in last? Why is it that no one will give college graduates a chance unless someone is throwing their weight around and practically getting the job for you? Does hard work and determination really not count anymore? You tell me.
At what point do you just lose faith in being properly employed and just make your own way?
How come things have gotten so bad that I can actually ask a question like that? Why doesn't the job industry care about young people? I really want to know...
